Reasons to Celebrate

Around our house, we're always looking for a reason to party, and what better reason is there than a new baby?  My cousin Megan is expecting her first son in May, so we invited her down for a weekend of fun and baby preparations.  Her nursery theme is pirate monkeys, which I love, but it actually turned out to be a little tough to find party decorations that simultaneously featured pirates AND monkeys, so our decor ended up being a little pirate heavy...
The girls were so excited to be reunited with Savanah.  They adore their older cousin...
Mom made the trip down to join the celebration...
And Sarah and Tripp wouldn't have missed it for anything...
Here's Savanah snuggling up to the guest of honor...
We started our weekend off with a yummy brunch and then spent a beautiful afternoon playing in the backyard while Damon grilled steaks for dinner.  The kids really enjoyed being outside on a nice warm afternoon...
Watts was not at all sure that he was in the mood for steak...
He is truly the child of a thousand facial expressions...

Savanah was eager to carry the little boys around.  Tripp was a willing recipient of her attentions, but Watts, not so much.  Guess he gets his fill of big girls trying to pick him up on a daily basis...

He was terrified...

Big kid in a little car...
This is Cille's normal facial expression...
Sweet Savanah trying to give Watts some lovin'; he's not interested...

This may be my favorite picture of Tripp of all time.  He loves our little pink car...

Grandpa is really getting the hang of this baby shower thing.  This was his second one...
I hope when I am 81 I will still be able to sit at the kids' table...
Damon trying to make the boys share.  They get a little territorial about their toys...
When it was time to open gifts, a couple of celebrities showed up: Tinkerbell and Wedding Cinderella!
Watts says cleanliness is next to Godliness...
Mom and her baby...
I guess it's obvious that Grandpa has a bumper crop of grand-girls...
Costume change...
Jessica, our family selfie expert, teaching Stella the tricks of the trade...

I believe there is a picture of Megan with this exact facial expression while opening a gift at about her 10 year old birthday party...some things never change!

Wonder who that's from?
Having 5 kids at the shower definitely increased the volume of toys in the living during the festivities...

The proud papa is on the left.  Jake doesn't really care for having his picture taken, so I had to sneak attack him to get this one.  Guess Megan forgot to warn him about me...

Cille was eager to give Megan baby care tips.  I guess she was drawing on her vast knowledge of child-rearing as mother of I Don't Know...

I think Jake is probably starting to wonder what exactly he's getting himself into...

Tripp really wanted to take his gift back home with him...it does look pretty fun, doesn't it?
The only major catastrophe came when we opened the cake box.  When I went to the bakery, I talked to them about our theme and they showed me several monkey cakes that they had done in the past.  We discussed adding some pirate elements to one of their monkey cakes and placed the order.  When Damon picked up the cake, he didn't bother to check it out, so that evening when it was time for dessert we were greeted by this creature...
Is it a pirate?  Is it a pig?  Is it a monkey?  Or is it some sick, twisted combination of all three?  We dubbed it the "pirate pig/monkey" and were just glad that it tasted much better than it looked...

On Sunday morning Mawmaw and Pawpaw were kind enough to babysit so that we could take an adults-only trip to New Orleans to visit the World War II Museum and catch a few Mardi Gras parades.  Visiting the museum was something that Grandpa and I have been wanting to do for a while, so it was really special to be able to share the experience with Megan, Jake, and Jessica.  It was wonderful to have the chance to spend time and reconnect with family members that I haven't seen in a long time.  The miles may separate us, but the love is always there.  I can't wait to meet Megan's little boy.  We love him already!
