Stella's Fancy Birthday Party, Part 1

Another year means another round of birthday parties at our house! Stella is our first birthday girl on the calendar, so a while back we talked to her about what kind of party she wanted.  She wanted girls only, to cook something at the party, and for the party to last as long as possible.  Together we chose a Fancy Nancy theme and started scouring our collection of Fancy Nancy books and the Internet for ideas we could use for the party.  Here were our simple welcome decorations.  I love to use books to decorate; it is easy and economical, since we already have quite the children's library.  I framed one of her cute invitations and added her school picture since it was the most recent one we had.  I used her Easter basket to hold our party favors (Fancy Nancy books for each girl to take home) and made it a little fancier by adding balloons later...
The mom-painted birthday banner has become a party staple around our house; the girls expect and look forward to it.  I printed some Fancy Nancy images from the web and added them to the banner for pizzaz.  We used an old Easter basket to hold poetry journals and pens with plumes for our guests...
A close-up of the banner...we added balloons to this later, too...
Taking a page from Fancy Nancy: Poet Extraordinaire we constructed a "Poetry Palace" in the backyard.  We used our pop-up canopy and some clamps from Home Depot to make tent walls out of blankets we already had...

Inside we made a floor using more blankets, added chairs, pillows, stuffed animals, a bouquet of flowers, and bon-bons (Hershey's kisses) for inspiration, and voila: a perfect hideaway for our young authors...
I also used some of our table covering roll to make a Photo Booth on the back patio.  I put a tin of dress-up gear nearby and let the kids have at it...
How fancy are they?
Cille opted for a serious expression...
See?  Told ya we added balloons later!
I used a silver sharpie to add the guests' names to the front of their poetry journals.  Finding your missing poetry journal became one of the major party games for parents and kids alike...
Even though the blanket walls made it quite stuffy in the poetry palace, the kids loved it and spent a lot of time playing inside...
Stella said girls only but she did agree to invite boys that were family, or like family, so the twins, Skylar, and Brandon all had a fancy time, too...

I love how it looks like they are really concentrating...
This girl...when did she get so tall?

Even Watts made an appearance in the poetry palace...
Cille loved the poetry journals...so much so that she wrote her name in permanent marker on the front of every single leftover one we had...seriously...
Poor Aunt Laina had to spend a little time in the stifling poetry tent as well.  The blankets were a cool effect, but stopped all air flow so that the inside of the tent was a heated situation...
Have I mentioned lately that Cille now refuses to wear her hair up?  It is driving us all nuts because it is just wild and in her face most of the time...

Stella and her friends share a lot of love...here they are bombarding one of their classmates with affection when she arrived at the party...
More birthday fun to come!
