I Love New York! (and you, too!)

Picture it...St. Francisville...2001...a beautiful spring day and two kids crazy enough to say "I do..."

Now that I've gotten my Golden Girls Sophia flashback out of the way, Damon and I did recently celebrate 13 years of marriage, and where better to celebrate than in the city that never sleeps?  We sure haven't slept much in the past 6 years, so we can relate.  Since we became parents, we've chosen to spend most of our time with our offspring, but we still realize that it is important to take time out and focus on each other every once in a while, and our anniversary seemed like as good an excuse as any to take a little trip just the two of us.  After all, when the last kid leaves for college I would much prefer to look over and see the face of my best friend instead of some stranger who kinda favors that guy I dated in college.  Anywho, the first step was to clear our travel plans with the BEST INLAWS ON EARTH, and as soon as they agreed to provide excellent childcare, we started booking our trip.  We did not bring the camera because, well, the kids were at home, so what were we gonna take pictures of?  I did snap a few with my phone just for fun...

Times Square...

We arrived Thursday and had tickets to the new Idina Menzel musical that night.  It was good, but so not family friendly.  (One of the songs is entitled WTF, if that gives you a clue as to content.)  We enjoyed seeing Idina perform and she even messed up and forgot a prop, which instead of ruining the show, actually was endearing and made it that much more memorable...
The hubs in front of the marquee...
And me with the John George two thumbs up...
Did I mention that we left 70 degree temperatures to go someplace where it was freezing?  I had to have lots of hot chocolate on this trip...hence, the double chin twins...
Friday we visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Turns out it is much like the Louvre, too much to absorb in one day...still fun, though!
Damon sent this screenshot to his dad, along with a picture of a barefoot baby in a stroller.  Pawpaw has a sock obsession, and we just wanted to illustrate that we are not the WORST parents on earth...

I took these inside the museum just because I liked the way it looked...

We found Jacques and Gus-Gus helping out in this sewing shop and had to send a picture to the girls. Amazing how when you are away from them they are the only thing on your mind...the kids, not the mice...
Damon's must do on the trip was a visit to Ellen's Stardust Diner.  Stella was our waitress once again and even remembered our Stella and sent her greetings...
Although we did not take dorky tourist pictures outside of it, we did see Rocky while we were there, and I would highly recommend that show to anyone.  I have never even seen the original Rocky movie, but the musical is one of the most immersive, unique, and amazing theatre going experiences I have ever had, and that is saying a lot in my opinion.  It is spectacular.  You must go if you have a chance, even if you don't like the Rocky movies.  I was on my feet cheering at the end, it was that good.

I would like to mention that before coming home on Saturday I did test paddle a kayak in a wetsuit in freezing temperatures, because it was important to Damon, and hey, that's just the kind of sacrificial spouse I am.  Damon decided he wanted to take said kayak home, so he drove back with it on top of a rental and I flew back by myself.

Although it was a short trip, it was a special treat to spend time just being Damon and Scarlett instead of dad and mom.  We had to remind ourselves over and over that we didn't have to slow down or take the path of least resistance for the kids.  After 13 years of good times and bad times, we still love each other, and that's a real accomplishment in my book.  Damon, I am so glad that God joined us together.  He knew we were perfect for each other, even before we did.  I look forward to many more anniversary celebrations together!
