Operation Christmas Child Box Destination Update

I promised an update on where our Operation Christmas Child boxes ended up, and here it is!  Our 29 boxes were divided up and ended up in three different locations: Chad, the Philippines, and Burkina Faso.  Be sure to click on each country to learn more about the shoebox ministry there.  For example, did you know that:

Shoebox gifts collected in the United States in 2015 will be delivered to 161,760 children in Chad. Praise God that over 621,316 children have received a shoebox since 2002, when Operation Christmas Child began distributing gifts there.
  • Chad has 11.6 million people and is located in Central Africa
  • 44% of the population is 14 years old or younger
I have to be honest, I did not even know there was a country called Burkina Faso. Please follow the links to learn more about the final destinations of our boxes and join us in continuing to pray for the recipients.

Not Home or Alone: Lost in New York

Following fake Christmas morning, we threw our suitcases in the car and headed to New Orleans to hop a plane for the Big Apple.  On the way to the airport, in a Mcallister-style mad rush, we discovered that we had left some of our show tickets in a drawer at home!  I guess it was better than leaving Kevin, but we were off to a rocky start.  Poor Pawpaw had to postpone his hunting trip to race the tickets to us before our plane took off.  He made it, and we were all able to board our flight before the doors closed.  We almost forgot several electronic devices at the security checkpoint also, but we even had enough time to go back and grab those.  We made it to NYC with 3 adults, 4 kids, and lots of luggage in tow for the anticipated cold weather.  Turns out, it was unseasonably warm in New York and we probably could have done without most of the layers we packed.  At least we were prepared.

Our first night in the hotel (It was historic...Hilton Midtown) things were going well until Corinne threw up.  While we had been busy packing clothes, she was apparently planning to bring along the stomach bug we had been passing around the house for the last couple of weeks.  Fun!  We cleaned her up and kept rocking and rolling, because, what else can you do?

On Sunday morning we hit the streets and did a little sight seeing before heading to our first show: Aladdin.  I took this photo with my phone while we were heading to the show.  I loved how Damon was just marching down the street handling business with all three of the big kids.  He didn't even really need me, as evidenced by me hanging out and taking pictures.  He sure has come a long way from the guy I married.  You go, Superdad...
After the show, which was great, we headed over to Toys R Us in Times Square.  Sadly, they were closing this location at the end of the year when their lease ran out, so we wanted to go and ride the famous ferris wheel one more time...
We naturally had to check out some of the merchandise while we were there, but buying anything was out of the question, since it was a couple of days before Christmas and the lines were out of control...
Me and my sweetie on the ferris wheel...
We appropriately got the Toy Story car...(they only allowed 4 riders so Daddy couldn't go.)

It's a bird...it's a plane...NO!  It's SUPERMAN!
Our official photo...
After Toys R Us, we were hungry so we went to one of our favorite places to eat in NYC- Ellen's Stardust Diner.  Unfortunately, you have to wait in line outside for a table at Ellen's, and since Cille was exhausted, she took a little nap on the sidewalk while we were in line.  This is how Pourciaus do NYC...if you are tired, take a nap on the concrete because this train is not stopping!
She perked up once we were inside...
The next day while Damon attended class we took the kids to play in Central Park...

As a resident of the (mostly rural or suburban) South my entire life, it is so weird to me to see such tall buildings surrounding a playground...
The park was too much fun for Corinne...or maybe it was that snowsuit.  Every time we put her in that thing she just went limp...

The first day Mawmaw stayed with Corinne while the rest of us went to the show, so it was my turn to keep Wren the next time.  Damon, Mawmaw, and the big 3 attended the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular and loved it.  Corinne and I checked out the Museum of Modern Art where I got to see Starry Night and chase her around for a while.  Afterwards we all met back up to see the tree at Rockefeller Center...
And then we took the stage door tour at Radio City Music Hall.  It was neat, and Stella and Cille enjoyed it, but if you have kids under the age of 5, DO NOT TAKE THEM.  Watts and Corinne were much less than enthusiastic about the tour and, as evidenced in this photo, a little disinterested in having their photograph taken with a real live Rockette...
We had dinner at Ellen's again that night and then packed up for our flight the next day to Buffalo.  More of our adventures are coming soon, so stay tuned!

Pretend Christmas Morning, Part 3

Christmas 2015 was also the year of the electronic pet at our house.  Stella got a cat...

Mawmaw got a hug...from a child, not an electronic pet...
Cille got a unicorn...
Corinne got a giant talking Elmo.  She did not know who or what he was...

Stella and Cille worked together to paint a beautiful Christmas ornament for Mawmaw and Pawpaw...
Great job, girls!
Stella's body gift was a quilt making set.  Instead of a quilt, she used the squares to craft everything from a dress for her baby doll to scarves for all of us to wear on our trip north...
Corinne's body gift was her very own big girl pillowcase.  Everyone else got pillow cases last year...

Corinne's spiritual gift may have been a little above her level, but she'll grow into it, and her siblings can enjoy it until she does...
I was most excited about Cille's spiritual gift.  She loves QR codes and scans them every chance she gets.  I found a kids' Bible that has QR codes all throughout that the reader can scan to watch a video version of the Bible story on their mobile device.  How great is that?  Cille loves it and spends time by herself exploring the Bible...

Mawmaw and Pawpaw gave Corinne this beautiful necklace with a cross inside a heart...
The kids "wrote" Mawmaw and Pawpaw their annual Our Adventures Together book once again this year.  I am not sure how many years in a row we have done this, but it is a great way to gather together all the photos and stories of time we spent together throughout the year.  I would love to have something like this from my own childhood, and hopefully someday the kids will appreciate this gift as much as their grandparents do...

What can I say?  We ALL love Captain America...

That's one stoic unicorn owner...

Stella got some chapstick called "Chicken Poop."  Ewwww...
Watts got a giant dinosaur toy...

And I was very surprised to receive exactly what I wanted!
Okay, maybe not as surprised as I would have been had I not gotten the Amazon shipping notification, but it is the thought that counts, and Damon sprang for the gift wrapping, so I actually got to open something this year.  I give my hubby two thumbs up in the thoughtfulness department...
In other news, I had an epic fail when it came to my gift for Damon.  I planned to order a canvas for him of our latest family photo, but couldn't get the image to upload at a high enough quality to actually make the order.  Eventually I had to just ask my favorite geek for help with placing the order, which kind of ruined the surprise for him.  Sorry, Damon.  I'll try again next year.

Once again we had a wonderful Christmas morning together, even if it was not actually December 25th.  Each year as I shop and prepare for this tradition I am always so thankful that we have stuck with the "3 gifts" rule.  It keeps Christmas morning with 4 kids from becoming too chaotic and adhering to the gold, frankincense, and myrrh categories helps us keep the emphasis on the real birthday boy and His gift to us.

Pretend Christmas Morning, Part 2

Stella wins the award for best reaction to a Christmas gift...
It's a camera, if you are wondering what could be that exciting...

She asked me about almost this exact model in a store the day before she opened this.  I told her those kind of cameras were only for grownups but she could ask her dad about it...

She said, "You said these were only for grownups!"  She is right; I did, and they are...
Corinne tried to give Stella some competition in the enthusiasm category...

She got a bitty baby!  These pictures look like she really liked it, but she lost interest pretty fast and moved on to trying to steal toys from her siblings...
Watts got a gun that shoots a bear target.  I should have opened it and checked it out first, because he needs to be much older to operate it properly...
Say cheese!
See what I mean?  Cille and Corinne already traded...
Watts loved Corinne's talking Elmo from Mawmaw and Pawpaw...

Watts got a cool dinosaur from Mawmaw and Pawpaw...
I guess Corinne wanted a dinosaur, too...

More to come...
