The Spillway

We've been blessed with a number of friends who live out of state or out of the country and many have contacted us regarding the news reports on the rising Mississippi River. We're happy to report that for now, we (and the rest of LaPlace) are sitting high and dry.

Since we had a bit of free time yesterday afternoon, we decided to make the short trip to the Bonnet Carre Spillway and check things out. Even though Damon narrates the video, we thought that an additional image may help put things in their proper context. On the image below, you'll notice where we live, denoted as "House" in red. The "A" marker is the location of the pavillion that is discussed in the video. We've also added red lines which show the spillway levees that are supposed to contain the flow of water, which heads from the river to the lake. Finally, we've also added "Spillway Bays" in red to denote the location where we went to view all of the action. The footage that was taken while we were driving is along the stretch of Airline Highway (61) between the spillway levees. If the image is too blurry, just click on it for the full size version, which should be a little easier to use.

Now that you know where all of this is happening, check out the footage.

Chad Ourso and his fiance, Alaina Chustz, went to the Morganza Spillway yesterday afternoon. His pictures are even more dramatic than the ones shared in the video above, but since the Morganza is so far away from us, we will leave coverage of it to the local media outlets.

Additional pictures of us playing at the pavilion area that is depicted in the video are here and here.

Some of Cille's First Steps

For a few days before Mother's Day, I had been hearing rumors of Cille taking steps.  That Sunday, she took a few in front of a group of witnesses including Grandma Tonie, Mawmaw, Pawpaw, Mawmaw Shirley, Stella, and Daddy.  So basically, everyone except me, since I was doing housework in the other room.  Later she was kind enough to do her new trick again.  I think it was the best Mother's Day present ever...

She is growing up too fast!

More Communal Living

Our token boys went fishing with Mr. John. Here they are showing off their catch...
Here are Stella and Molly, pretending it is their catch...
The fish were slimy...
I love how Molly and her dad are basically making the same face...
For some reason, the girls started dancing and giggling by the fish...
I have no idea...
Funny girls...
Back inside, Talia and Cille hung out together...
Talia is such a helpful friend...
Sweet Sadie is only 6, but she'd already make a great mom...
Sweet girls...

Back to the Beach!

The wind was high and the water was choppy, but that didn't stop us from having a great time on the beach...
If you think there are a lot of kids in this picture, you should keep in mind that four of them are missing...
Cille tested the waters...
While Stella already knew how much fun running from the surf can be...
See?
She's so athletic.  It was just like Chariots of Fire...

She loves to hang out with Emma.  I think Stella believes herself to be just as old as Emma...
"Come on, come on!"
This was the best family shot we could manage.  No, Sarah, my face is not really that white.  I went a little overboard with the sunscreen...
Four of the big kids.  Where was Aaron?
The view from a distance.  Check those waves...
Going to get water...
Sand castle time...
So industrious...
Even Cille got in on the action...
Sisters, working together...
Cille didn't quite know what to make of the sand...
Three of the "little" girls...
Cheese!
What is this stuff?
Teamwork!
Back at the camp, there was more sliding and some outdoor showering...
This picture is especially for Matt.  I just wanted you to see that Stella's first outdoor shower was nothing like my own...

The Grand Isle Commune

Our friends the Guillory's have a camp in Grand Isle. You might remember us visiting them there at the end of last summer. In honor of spring break and the fact that all our kids (and those of us who are teachers) had no school, they invited our family and the Millet family to once again be their guests in Grand Isle. What do you get when you combine 6 adults and 9 kids in one camp at the beach? A little piece of communal living heaven!  We love these people and could live with them year round!  Actually, my perfect life might consist of Kelly and Missy doing the cooking and me doing the....well, I'm not really sure what I contribute, but I had lots of fun!  Here is Aaron taking a swim in the foot bath...
Cille was not too sure about the pool area at first.  She may have also been embarrassed because she didn't have her swimsuit on yet.  She's a little more prudish than Stella...
She's happy now!
Oh!  This water is cold!
Like the matchy-matchy swimsuits?
Splash!
Nearby, things were heating up on the racetrack...
Cille decided it was warmer on Missy's lap...
Uh, oh!  The little girls finally got brave enough to try out the water slide...
I think she likes it!
Wheee!
Molly likes it, too!
Talia loves her "Baby Cille"...
Action shot...
Stay tuned for lots more beach fun!
